Honda U.S. production tops Japan

Automaker built more vehicles here than in its homeland

Christine Tierney / The Detroit News

Honda Motor Co. marked a milestone during the April-June quarter, building more vehicles in the United States than in Japan.

Honda assembled 236,819 vehicles in the United States and 236,559 in Japan during its fiscal first quarter, according to a report issued this week.

Honda's U.S.-based officials couldn't say whether it was the first time that the company's U.S. output exceeded production in Japan for a full quarter.

For the first six months of 2010, Honda's Japanese output of 491,024 vehicles surpassed the U.S. total of 480,913 vehicles.

But officials said that Honda, the first Japanese automaker to build a U.S. factory, has been increasing its local output. "As part of Honda's long-standing commitment to build Honda and Acura products close to our customers, we have steadily deepened our manufacturing roots in the United States and North America," said spokesman David Iida.

The proportion of Honda vehicles sold in the United States that are produced in North America reached 90 percent in the first six months of 2010.

In all of North America, Honda's output totaled 322,260 vehicles in the first quarter of the fiscal year begun on April 1.

2011 Honda CR-Z Unveiled at

2010 Detroit Auto Show

DETROIT — The long-awaited production version of the 2011 Honda CR-Z, already previewed inconcept form and widely disseminated on the Web, makes its official debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The new sport hybrid goes on sale in late summer in the U.S.

The target market for the car seems odd — what Honda refers to as "people with a spirit of adventure and an elevated sense of responsibility toward the environment."

The two-passenger CR-Z is powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine, mated to a version of the IMA hybrid-electric system from the Honda Insight and fitted with a new three-mode drive system. Buyers can choose from a standard six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable automatic (CVT) with paddle shifters and a sport mode. Peak output is 122 horsepower, and peak torque is 128 pound-feet (123 with the CVT).

Honda projects EPA city/highway fuel economy ratings of 36/38 mpg with the CVT and 31/37 with the manual.

For the U.S. market, Honda will offer a base CR-Z and an uplevel CR-Z EX. Standard features include stability control, a CD player with USB connectivity, automatic climate control, power windows and locks, remote entry and cruise control. The EX version adds high-intensity-discharge headlamps, foglamps, a 360-watt premium audio system, a perforated-leather-wrapped steering wheel and a center console with armrest.

Honda is offering a satellite navigation system with voice recognition only on the CR-Z EX.

From Wall Street Journal

A piece from WSJ about 2010 Car Industry.

The most dramatic turnabout is in the sport-utility vehicle segment. In 2000, the best-selling SUV in America was the Ford Explorer, a vehicle built on a rear-wheel-drive, pickup-truck-style chassis and outfitted with either a six- or an eight-cylinder engine. In 2009, the best-selling "SUV" was the Honda CRV, which is built on a compact, carlike front-wheel-drive chassis and powered by a four-cylinder engine.
